Short Property Description
Since 1978 Birdwood Downs Station has pioneered ecological methods of improving degraded lands using stock management, weed control and planting improved grasses. Now the beautiful paddocks with their groves of native trees, spectacular boabs and eucalyptus, serve as a model for sustainable management of the tropical savannah and support our horses and cattle herd.
Our small scale Tourism facilities include a bush style campground in the beautiful gardens around the homestead.
Helpers are part of the ‘extended family’. The work you do here is varied: weed control in the paddocks in the early morning, working in the vegetable garden, weed control around the homestead, planting and harvesting, maintenance on machines, operating machines. You will help with our tourist operation. We ask you to work 5 hours every workday and participate in the cooking roster on top of that. In the weekend we all spend an hour or two on housekeeping.
We provide your meals and on some evenings a glass of wine. Life should be enjoyed. You live in a Savannah Hut, a free standing single bedroom with shared facilities. In principle you have a room for yourself, occasionally when we have a full crew and many tourists we ask you to share the room with another helper.
We have a varying crew with changing nationalities.
