Organic Vegetable & Fruit Growers- Discussion Group

SELECTION and TERMINATION of COVER CROPS
for organic growers considering  NO-TILL OR STRIP TILL’

No-till/reduced till horticulture has proven to deliver significant benefit to vegetable growers
profitability, productivity and to soil health. However, organic growers face additional
challenges with no-till methods such as choosing & terminating green manure crops. Maurie
Cafra (Cafresco organics) is about to trial no-till on a small area of his farm & we will be
monitoring the results this season.

Dr Kelvin Montagu is a research associate with Applied Horticultural Research (AHR). He has
over 30 years experience in leading research and extension in soil management, with a recent
focus on tillage, cover crops, irrigation and climate change impacts and adaptation. Kelvin
delivers practical, research based information to the horticultural industry.

Kelvin will be our guest presenter and will talk specifically about no-till for organic farmers,
selection of green manure crops and subsequent termination of the crop prior to planting.
