Short Property Description
Hilldene is a hobby farm in the Avon Valley, WA. I have dairy cows and goats for milking and grow my own vegetables and fruit using permaculture practices. The milk is also used for producing butter and cheese.
The work is primarily feeding and taking care of the livestock. Also an opportunity to learn how to milk the cows, make cheese and butter. There is a large vegetable garden to feed the farm, no-till practices are used, experience will include, learning how to compost, raising seedlings, planting out and maintaining the garden. Animal manure is collected from the livestock yards and used in the compost heaps.
Organic/Biological methods we use
I use no-till methods in the vegetable garden with layering of composts and mulch. The fruit trees are mulched and fertilised solely with animal manures and composted vegetation.
Livestock are fed non-processed feedstuffs, pelleted or processed feeds are avoided where possible.
Weed control is via grazing, mowing or hoeing. No chemicals are used on the farm.

Why I became a WWOOF Host
I have an opportunity here to share my 45 odd years of knowledge managing my own farm for self sustainability. I need to recover from a spinal operation (around 3 months but happy to look at longer if required) and thought that it would be a great chance for someone to stay here to give me a hand for 2 to 3 hours per day (7 days a week) in exchange to learning all about how to look after yourself using permaculture practices, and organic methods.
I have friends locally with farms that can offer casual paid work, eg on an organic vegetable farm .
A private bedroom and bathroom is provided as well as food (no meat) and utilities. I am happy to share cooking the evening meal or you can prepare your own meals. WiFi and utilities included.
I am happy to accommodate couples if you have your own caravan, I can provide power and utilities.
If interested I could also teach you how to milk the cow and other self sufficiency skills,
