City/Town: Lakes Entrance
Farming Methods: Organic
Accommodation Type: In Our Home
I am a 66-year-old living on a scenic farmlet of 22 acres located 12 kilometres west of Lakes Entrance. With a large garden that encompasses vegetables, herbs, berries, an olive grove, and an orchard; it is a haven for a huge variety of native birds. I also have about a dozen hens, a rather noisy rooster, an aging horse, a dog and, at times, some neighbour’s sheep. Work varies from helping in the gardens/orchard, planting/harvesting the vegetables, wood chopping, weed control using non chemical methods and odd jobs. I do not actually practise permaculture but make my own compost and soil.  At one end of the property is a bush gully that abounds with local wildflowers and native animals; this is a corridor between the State Forest and the wetlands on the edge of the Gippsland Lakes. Being located near the Lakes also means it is close to the Ninety Mile Beach.

Gardenfarm is a storybook farm in the lush hills of South Gippsland.  It has geese, chickens, orchards, sheep, cattle, and holiday accommodations, with a pristine stream meandering though it all. Bob Tatnell has developed the farm over 15 years, inspired by his mentors Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton. Gardenfarm is currently re-inventing itself as a park for a regenerative campervan community. We run wellness Retreats, engage with Landcare open days, and enjoy having guests staying over in cottages and our tinyhouse accommodation. Soon we hope to get back to growing and preserving food, our favourite thing, but we have been busy in recent years.

Skills I Want to Learn:
One reason is to experience rural Australia and engage with locals in a deeper way than just in an employer-employee relationship. While I love farm work and always try to do neat work, I consider myself more human-oriented than task-oriented. Meaningful and warm connections are important to me, and I am searching for hosts who share that mindset. Another reason is to learn more about sustainable ways of farming.

We live on a beautiful 120 acre cattle property in the Northern Rivers. The property backs on to National Park in a very serene & quiet area with many opportunities for nature walks. We have undulating pastures as well as many treed gullies. The property has stunning views down the valley & of the Border Ranges. A great location to see the spectacular sunsets in Winter & watch the summer storms come through.

The reason why we believe Wwofing is for us is because of our background working outside, as Landscaper we learnt valuable skills that could relate with the job and were not afraid to live remotely, coming from France and NZ couple who lives opposite side of the world.

We are eager to have new experiences and learn about different lifestyles and cultures. Australia was interesting for both of us since we heard a lot about it's diverse nature and attractions from people who already visited Australia. Another reason was the infamous Australian lifestyle which seems to be so different to what we know. We also wanted to get to know more about the life on an Australian farm and since WHOOF offers so many different opportunities it seemed to be a great option for us, as we want to explore and learn as much as possible.

“Millpost” is a 2700 acre wool growing property 30km east of Canberra. We have been implementing aspects of permaculture design since 1979. We mostly run merino sheep but also some poultry, house cows, sheep dogs, and cats. We grow much of our vegetables and have a nursery of trees for planting on the farm. Millpost is a beautiful part of the Southern Tablelands, with rolling hills, Box woodlands, native grasslands and some great creeks and dams to swim in. We sit next to Kowen Forest, a popular destination for it’s mountain bike trails, river, history and Molonglo Gorge. Other attractions include our old lime kiln and aboriginal axe quarry. WWOOFers are included in all work on the farm and could be gardening, planting, working with sheep, fencing, building, whatever we are doing at the time.

I want to get hands on practical experience and learning on a range of different farms to help orient my future career. I work in climate strategy and understand how fundamental the way we produce and consume food is to being resilient into the future, and want to be part of bringing about change to the way we do this that allows us to improve soil and nourish people. I want to learn and absorb it all to understand the contexts of different growing, what works and what doesn’t, how different approaches are being sought. I’m very excited that I’m taking this time to learn and grow in the area that sets my heart on fire.
