We have come out of early retirement to start up our Boutique Potted Christmas tree farm on small lakeside acreage on the beautiful Atherton Tableland near Cairns in Far North Queensland. Lake Tinaroo is recognised as a world class fishery for large stocked Barramundi fish and social water sports. The Tableland area has a showcase of scenic waterfalls, locally grown produce, restaurants and interesting must see villages. Its Avocado and other tropical fruits and vege farms provide plenty of casual work in season. We have a detached shed with couples accommodation including kitchen and bathroom as well as a singles caravan and or second room in the residence.   Transport would be an advantage.   Read the WWOOF Blog about us HERE

I joined WWOOF because I expect it to be a good platform to meet and get to know authentic Australian people. It’s also a good way for me to gain life experience and doing something that creates value. I also hope it to be a way that I can get to know the Australian nature and culture.

I'd like to live and work in harmony with nature, communicate with people in a natural and open way, and live a healthy life. I also want to improve my English. I'm sensitive to chemicals like synthetic detergents or fragrances etc. and I love natural things, so I'm happy to work on organic farms.

Grant has a range of experience growing food and managing farms, having started in horticulture 43 years ago, then creating a landscaping business in Sydney for 8 years. He completed a Permaculture Design Certificate 35 years ago and upgraded the landscaping business to an edible landscape business shortly after. He then opened 3 nurseries in Sydney selling organic herbs, vegetables and ferns. He worked in the Findhorn Community in Scotland for 3 years looking after a nursey section, market garden and a large tunnel house growing summer crops. Directly after that he managed a 1 ½ acre market garden supplying vegetables to The Columbus Hotel on the Isle of Iona. Grant has been working with internationally renowned permaculturist, Geoff Lawton on a regular basis making permaculture videos for over 6 years. As a family we have been hosting Willing Workers on Organic Farms for over 18 years. We are looking for an energetic person with a strong work ethic with a physical working background and general gardening experience is preferred. This experience would suit someone who wants to learn how to manage land and grow their own food organically or is interested in becoming a permaculture teacher, designer, landscape gardener, nursery manager or market gardener.

I tried to go everything (foods, makeup, skincare, etc.) organic since 2017 but I couldn’t make it 100% because of my hectic lifestyle in Tokyo as a flight attendant. I decided to learn more about the organic world in Australia, an organically-developed country compared to Japan. I believe that immersing myself in the organic farming community through WWOOFing will provide me with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. I am eager to connect with like-minded individuals, share knowledge, and contribute to a lifestyle that aligns with my values.

Farming Methods: Permaculture

Our 21-acre farm is about 15 minutes outside Singleton, NSW; that is two hours north of Sydney and one hour away from Newcastle. We are a developing lavender farm with a variety of different cultivars of lavender. We have performed substantial planting and soil regeneration operations over the last three of years. We are currently nurturing our plants and soil to a point where they can supply a good harvest of flowers over summer, for essential oil distillation and dried lavender bouquets. We follow organic and sustainable practices to continually improve our soil. We look forward to our WWOOFers being able to enjoy our farm, learn about lavender farming, Australian lifestyle, culture and farm life, sustainable practices, while providing assistance with its development. There are plenty of kangaroos and wallabies around the farm, and we have a dog and a cat. We certainly work very hard on our farm and there is something to do all day every day. During your farming experience, you'd be looking at doing some hours of farm-work throughout the day, and have free time to relax (in winter we mostly relax in the evenings, in summer we relax after lunch if it's hot, then continue). We work around the weather, so on some days to avoid the heat, we may get started by 6am, and when possible, work till sunset. If it rains, there are other indoor tasks to complete. We invite you to enjoy homecooked meals with us, have a laugh, and socialise with our family and friends. We hope to meet enthusiastic, responsible and mature WWOOFers, who love nature and enjoy country surroundings, who are keen to learn and help out, and are appreciative and respectful, just like we are. Hunter Valley is known for its wineries - for anyone travelling with a car, there are wineries  and a lake about half an hour from our farm. Send us a message with any questions, and an idea of how long you'd like to stay - we look forward to hearing from you!

We're seeking unique experiences while traveling and looking for ways to explore the country on a budget. We enjoy meeting new people, hearing their stories, and seeing how others live. Originally, we planned to settle in one place and work before traveling, but we realized we'd feel more fulfilled by working and traveling in a more local and personal way. We're here in Australia for an extended stay, and we're eager to find meaningful work where we can contribute and grow during our time here.
