I live on a large rural block two and half acres. Most of this is grass and garden beds. I’m 70 years old and not long widowed. Due to the size of the yard I need to sell and downsize do require some help to get my garden into top shape. I grow a lot of beautiful annual and other flowers including roses. I love to cook for family and friends. I have nice accomodation for my guests.

I have been volunteering in Queensland for the past month and a half, and I don't want my time to end. I will still have an entire month left on my visa by the time I am able to start with WWOOF, and I want to take advantage of my time here by learning something, meeting new people, and doing something that can create positive change. Being a recent college graduate, exploring and staying in Australia wouldn’t really be possible without programs like this. It's my long term goal to continue on to graduate school, but before I do that, I want to take full advantage of my time and of my youth to fully explore this country in an unconventional and fulfilling way.

I find that WWOOFing is a great way to get to know new people and to be able to exchange ideas, and I think that meeting people is one of the bases of traveling. This would also allow me to adapt to new environments.

I signed up for Wwoof because I mainly want to plan the start of my trip to Australia and want to experience the typical work and travel experience. I like the concept because you have contact with a family and can support them. I'm also looking forward to getting to know working on a farm and, ideally, taking care of lots of animals. Of course I also want to see as much of Australia as possible.

WWOOF presented an extraordinary opportunity to immerse myself in a different way of life, gain hands-on experience in agriculture, and explore the stunning landscapes of Australia. I really want to explore the country and its people, this seemed the best way to do this! The prospect of working alongside passionate hosts and fellow WWOOFers, sharing stories and knowledge, greatly appealed to me. In essence, I joined WWOOF to make the most of my time in Australia. I want to give my summer purpose and make the most of being on this side of the world. There seemed to be no better way than to explore the country over a long period of free time than with WWOOfing.

Despite growing up in the metropolis of London, I spent much of my childhood on the Isle of Skye, Scotland - a location integral to my identity because I believe it set the foundations of me having a profound connection with the land and the nature that inhabits it. A connection that arises whenever and wherever I'm fortunate enough to be amongst nature, a connection that brings clarity to the mind and forces me to be present in the moment. I find myself most grounded when out in the natural world; I am drawn to the water and the wildlife that feeds from it in the most invigorating way. With any WWOOF opportunities, I hope to continue to strengthen this connection and give back to the earth. I find myself unsatisfied with the notion of conforming to a life of conservatism, which the education system indoctrinates students into believing is the right path for a life of comfort and security. After many years of battling with mental health, I am now on my own path of discovering/cementing my values and redefining what “success” looks like to me. Starting with achieving and maintaining peace of mind, finding love in community and stimulation in human relationships. I believe we as humans have so much to learn from each other and the environments we make our homes in. I have always had a strong inclination to learn and develop skills, not only of physical action and intellectual practice but also inter-personal skills that will make me a better person to know and to be. I hope to achieve greater awareness of different lifestyles, build resilience and meet a range of people I wouldn't come across without the WWOOF opportunities. I truly want to immerse myself in these new experiences to gain the most out of them. To quote Jon Krakauer from one of my favourite books, ‘Into The Wild’ : “It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found”

My partner and I were really keen to see more of this beautiful country. So we purchased a van and have fit it out as a camper for our travels. After WWOOFing the first time, I was really keen to do it again one day, here in Australia or overseas. Since meeting my partner, I've got her excited on the idea of learning sustainable practices. We hope to learn how to grow beautiful healthy produce, learn some new skills and techniques and help better the land.

I like to learn more about nature, life and people in Australia. Also I want to support, be out in nature and "work with my hands" (as contrast to my normal job environment)

While working for a large corporation in an industrial area of Canberra, I noticed a large, bare patch of ground that seemed to be going to waste. I approached management about the possibility of setting up of a staff garden, providing them with the benefits this would bring, including on-site composting, team-building, staff morale, and growing produce. I worked with professionals to plan and set up the garden with vegetable beds, compost bins and a central shaded/sheltered area for group meetings, along with indoor compost bins for every kitchen. I set up a working group, organised education sessions with various experts, learned about companion planting, planned working bees, rosters, harvest days, and lunches using produce we'd grown. This was such a rewarding project, and I loved learning from other people, being productive and spending time outdoors being active.

City/Town: North Deep Creek
Farming Methods: Permaculture
Accommodation Type: In Our Home, Separate Building
The property is a stunning self-sufficient, private 24 acre property with amazing views of the countryside and rolling green pastures (with Mt Cooroy and Mt Coorora in the distance), tropical gardens, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, dams, creek, fire pits, chickens, peacocks, colourful birds and an abundance of wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, possums, echidnas, pythons and goannas. There is also an elusive platypus in the creek. Some very friendly camels holiday periodically on the property to keep down the grass; there may or may not be camels during your stay depending on whether the paddocks are being given a spell to allow the new grass to grow back and provide fresh pickings for the camels and wildlife.  There is also a rescued miniature bull who is very friendly. The property is called “Aram Shanti” which is Sanskrit for “rest and relaxation, and peace” and is located 10kms out of Gympie (Qld).  It is a place and space of positivity, beauty, generosity of spirit and gratitude. It sits on a ridge and always has a cool breeze. It is a perfect base to explore the area, including Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, Inskip, Fraser Island, Noosa and environs, the Eumundi Markets, Maleny, Montville and the Blackall Ranges etc with many National Parks and State Forests in the area. The host (who is a retired corporate lawyer, entrepreneur, and long-term vegetarian and meditator) is a conscious environmentalist who runs the property on general permaculture principles with an emphasis on respecting the inherent worth of all living beings, fauna and flora regardless of their/its instrumental utility to human needs. She does not belong to any specific movement or organisation but comes from a metaphysical point of view that we are all part of nature, and that all life is sacred. As Shakespeare said “And therefore as a stranger give it welcome. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” She grew up on a farm in the Daintree area of Northern Queensland amidst taipans, death adders, crocodiles, wild boar, and other creatures and has always appreciated the land, forests, trees, water, herbs, wildlife, and natural foods. She has always been a custodian of the land and her properties have been sanctuaries for wildlife and transformational spaces for humans. She values one’s surrounding/environment as important to wellbeing and regards food as medicine.

I would like to use the gap in between jobs and take the opportunity to volunteer and also learn something from organic farms. My current job is in pharma industry in a medium sized corporation. I started this job right after college and I feel that I need a change of scenery as the corporate culture is not something I currently align with. I believe that WWOOF can help me broaden my perspective on work and life in general as well as help me get in touch with more nature in my life :).

I joined because WWOOFing has been recommended by my mum who has done this 30 odd years ago. She told me it was a great way to meet new people and experience new things which I am all for! By joining I hope to open up a new alleyway to different experiences which I might not usually have the opportunity to back home. I also see it as a great way to learn new skills and a different way of life as a whole.

The truffiere, an organic black truffle farm, is located in Araluen, an idyllic valley south of Braidwood. The valley has a rich Aboriginal and European history including being the centre for alluvial gold mining from the 1860's. The farm has. 2 hectares of mostly hazel trees inoculated with the black truffle (tuber melanosporum) with other plantings including acacia, fruit trees, white cedar and native trees. Four bee hives provide honey. The farm is operated on permaculture principles and a scientific understanding of the symbiotic relationship between the truffle and the tree. The owners are an environmental scientist/teacher and a founder of a social enterprise. The house is large with three bedrooms, two bathrooms enabling privacy for our guests, It has all modern conveniences including wifi and telstra G4 but is off-grid. Ammenities include a 300,000L water storage for swimming. The valley is peaceful and full of wildlife including kangaroos, echidnas, wombats and thousands of birds. Platypus are found nearby. Swimming in pristine rivers nearby is a real experience to be remembered. The owners

I read a section of "The Education of Little Tree" when I was in Elementary school. Although I can't remember specific content in the book, but I still feel touched by the respect for the earth. Since then, I have a desire to experience another culture and way of life, gain experience in diverse work, and connect with like-minded individuals who care about giving back to the earth. Although I don't have many experience in agriculture(just did land grading a few years ago), I am willing to get my hand dirty and eager to gain new skills. Hoping one day these skills can make the world a better place. 😃
