Accommodation Type:
We live in an original farmhouse in the hills behind Apollo Bay, overlooking the southern ocean and the Great Ocean Rd, and close to NPs. We try to live a self-sufficient lifestyle, growing as much of our own food as we can, recycling and repairing rather than consuming. Rusty is a master at fixing things and Deb is an English teacher and can help with language learning. We have a large orchard and vegetable garden, plus a large ornamental garden which meanders through the rainforest. Wallabies, glow worms, koalas, king parrots and other wildlife surround us. Work includes making & maintaining garden beds & tending the orchard, pruning, weeding, mulching, planting & seed propagation. We're fixing the house, so carpentry & painting is also possible. We love to eat good food, enjoy a glass of wine & hear travel stories. We have travelled extensively, and love hosting other travellers, so do come for a visit. Accom for up to 4 in our home, with own room & bathroom. Mixed diet, shared with the family. NSI.

I have joined WWOOF because I see it as the perfect way to step into, and learn from, a community of people who have committed their livelihoods to caring for, and working with, our land. I want to learn practical skills in ecologically oriented land management techniques, specifically; growing food crops, soil health/composting, perennial plants and working with animals. I also want to experience life at a different pace and one that is centered around a smaller, closer community. I am very aware of the environmental and social challenges that face us today and into the future and I want my life's work to contribute to the solution and not the problem. In the future I hope to work in urban areas and develop community programs in closed loop food production and I see this as my next step to obtain the skills I will need to continue down this path.

If you want to connect with the earth and nature, this is a peaceful place where you have time to think & dream about you and your life. If its physical activity you are looking for, I can oblige with interesting building projects and landscaping. If you are not a gardener – I will try to use your skills to make the most of your natural talents or help you learn new skills or you can teach me some. The work is varied including weeding, mulching, planting, feeding chooks, drying herbs etc. IT, graphic design & creative skills are also welcome. I am renovating my house, this year and will build steps and landscape with big stones. Accommodation is in my home but if you like the great outdoors and fancy being more adventurous, there is undercover camping and I have a caravan that needs doing up if you have any building skills - help with my renovation is always welcome. Let me know if you like painting, cooking or any other favourite skill to share. You may want to improve your English in this lovely green paradise. We have a pool for the summer, BBQ, hand-built cob pizza oven and outside fire place. If you would like to do yoga and meditation, weaving natural materials, drawing the wildlife and hiking the rainforests nearby or just sitting in a tree, this could be the perfect place for you. Mixed diet. Non-smokers only. Negotiable stays after initial visit. I look forward to welcoming you to Magical Maleny.

Working on an organic and sustainable farm is a dream of mine. I grew up in a metropolitan area, and was very out of touch with the food system. In college, I began to learn about farming, and the problems with the American Agricultural System from abuse of animals to inaccessibility of healthy options to food waste. Learning about the food system changed my life. I changed my diet, met some local farmers, and starting growing a bit of food and herbs myself! This September, I'll be starting as a procurement consultant in Atlanta. Before I dive into this opportunity, I want to get hands-on sustainable agricultural experience, spend time outdoors, be physically exhausted, and get dirt-y! Not only do I hope to learn and grow and work a lot personally, but also I plan to bring this with me into the corporate procurement world. I want to help businesses see the benefits of buying locally and sustainably.
