Family owned egg and beef producers. 3000 hens in 5 mobile trailers with 6 Maremma dogs. 200 acres in the ranges 5km from Willunga. 13km to nearest beach. In renowned wine district of McLaren Vale. Stunning scenery. Lots of kangaroos and bird life.
Work includes tending to animals, 2-3 hours of egg collecting daily following guidelines, stock rotation and revegetation. Accommodation for 2 in separate caravan and new farm quarters, fully insulated, off-grid, wood fire heating throughout. Modern bathroom and well-stocked kitchen. Some shared meals, and food provided to prepare your own. Mixed diet. No children. No smoking on property. Run by friendly, fun families who live off-farm, but use farm quarters throughout the week and on the weekends. 2 week stays, longer stays negotiable.
Organic/Biological methods we use
We produce pastured free-range eggs from happy hens who forage free in open paddocks by day and roost in mobile trailers by night. The hens enrich our soil by eating bugs and weeds and providing natural fertiliser – rotating weekly to new pasture.
Pastured free-range eggs are ethically produced premium eggs. Our farming system ensures our hens have unrestricted access to outdoors and fresh pasture. These hens don’t just lay eggs; they are integral to the bio-diversity of our farms. They are rotated around our farms every week, following the grazing pattern of our cattle. The hens scratch, dig, bathe in the dust, peck the cow manure and fertilise the soil. This ‘multi-species’ approach to farming mimics nature, controls parasites and weeds and sustainably improves production rates. It regenerates the soil, unlike any other commercial egg production.
The hens are also fed a locally grown, nutritionist-designed, GMO-free, soy-free grain. No feedlots. No overcrowding. No confinement. This means a lower stocking rate, less than 75 hens per hectare, compared to higher density free range of 10 000 hens per hectare.
Our hens are tended by hand daily and protected by Maremma guardian dogs by day and night.
We provide full training for egg collection and animal care. You will need to be fairly confident with livestock and able to work without constant supervision as our farmers come and go from the farm.
There may also be the opportunity to be involved at the Willunga Farmers Markets on Saturday mornings which would give insight into how we market our produce and what consumers are looking for.
