    Short Property Description

We have been farming on “Selby” for 34 years & introduce their environmentally friendly property “Selby” which is a 3,174 hectare Certified Organic farm, holistically managed in Rankins Springs in the Riverina of NSW.

    Full Property Description

Ron & I have developed Selby over 34 years into what it is today (1/2 of that time we have been organic) 3, 174 hectares of environmental, holistically managed dry land farming & breedng dorper ewes.    We’ve have been developing our natural farming system since the mid 1990’s and now run a flock of around 1, 200 Dorper Breeding Ewes using Holistic Grazing Management to balance livestock health, productive pastures and soil fertility.

We also grow cereal grains, produce hay from Lucerne and oats during good seasons to sustain stock health during times of drought.    Water supply is very precious as we are not on the pipeline.

The property incorporates a vast area of bush land and hill, with about 640 hectares being part of a voluntary conservation agreement because of its abundance of unique and natural habitat to a variety of native flora & fauna.  All together this biodiversity is included and valued in balance with our farming operations

Recently in an effort to diversify income & try something different, Andrea has started a little project being ‘Selby Organic Farm Stay’.  She has opened up the property to interested visitors in a renovated Shearers Quarters (where any WWOOFers will be staying).  This is an exclusive experience, so visitors won’t have to share with anyone.  We have only been opened since April, 2017 & still have things on the wish list to provide for visitors.  However I won’t go on anymore, for more information go to our website:

WWOOF Australia has done a Blog post about us, you can read it on their News Page

    Organic/Biological methods we use

We have been organic now for nearly 20 years.  We holistically manage the property, with a bit of opportunity cropping eg: oats for hay, if a wet year sow a bit of summer feed….. Our main farming enterprise is lamb, so there is always some sheep work to do: lamb marking, weaning lambs, filling feeders etc

    Special Conditions

We are pretty relaxed here with only the two of us at home now as the kids are off into the world.  Andrea drives a school bus so ‘time’ is important here.   Summer is pretty dry & hot here, so often we are up early & might then have the afternoon off, until cooler where we might start again.  During this relaxed time, you can swim, do a bit of yabbying or just read a book….

As part of our organic accreditation, we have started mid way through this year keeping a bio security register which you will have to sign as visitors, whether you have a vehicle or not.  Nothing to sinister we promise, just a few quick questions like where have you been, was it a pig farm, are your boots clean from the last property you visited etc.

We would prefer no smokers and definitely no smoking in accommodation.  Diet wise we do cater for everyone, but as this is a sheep farm, meat is on the menu!  We are an hour from town & only go to town once a week or even every 2 weeks.    However if a special diet is required please make sure we know about it, as it is not always as easy as it seems to cater…..fresh vegies etc are limited sometimes & as for GF, well we’d have to do homework for that menu.   The main thing is communication, please just let Andrea know early in these talks!

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We became hosts around 25 years ago to exchange cultures, meet new friends & share what we are trying to achieve here on our property.

Ron had been an exchange student to Montana when he was younger, thoroughly enjoying the experience, then becoming Agricultural Exchange hosts ourselves, which went on to hosting WWOOFers, with the shorter stay suiting us better.  As we had then started farming organically, we have thoroughly enjoyed over the years the wonderful exchange of cultures, ideas & friendship which we have gained, meeting so many like-minded people, learning about their world without us having to leave the place at all!
