    Short Property Description

We are on a 2.5 acre permaculture property in the quiet, picturesque Lower Barrington in NW Tasmania. We are Kirstie and 3 teenage sons, chickens, 2 dogs and guinea pigs. We are a Christian family, but you won’t be expected to participate in theological discussions unless you want to!

Edible crops include apples, cherries, apricots, peaches, pepper berries, blueberries, jostaberries, feijoas, mulberries, chestnuts, lemons, vegetables, herbs and more.

Our beehive ensures we have excellent pollination of our crops.

    Full Property Description

Kirstie and her 3 teenage sons live on a 2.5 acre permaculture property at Lower Barrington, which has been in development since September 2012. It started as a sheep paddock and was simply observed for the first year so we could get to know it.

From there followed the passive solar designed house which is powered by solar with mains power as back up only. We only connected to the grid in May 2018 when the newly built cottage was added. Its power is both solar and mains power.

There has been extensive planting of edible, native and flowering plants with a view to having a self-sustaining system at maturity with the added bonus of income producing capability. Wallabies and other wildlife have free range of the property. We recently added chickens, which are keeping us well stocked with eggs. Bees have been on the property from the beginning. We have guinea pigs free ranging in the vegetable garden. Their job is to keep the grassy paths mowed.

We are currently taking only single people. You will have your own space in the sunroom, although you will be sharing with my potted frangipani tree, which is too big to move out!

Current projects include making new beds in our kitchen vegetable garden, which measures approx 20x10m; ongoing planting and watering of new plantings; weeding; making compost;  fencing;  and general maintenance.

The main photo shows the valley we look down onto. The property is in a quiet subdivision of acreage blocks. At 2.5 acres, ours is one of the smallest blocks.

We are situated 20 minutes from the coastal city of Devonport where the Spirit of Tasmania berths, and 15 minutes from beautiful Sheffield-the famous Town of Murals. Railton, the Town Of Topiary is not far from Sheffield. We are 1 hour from world heritage Cradle Mountain National Park. The iconic Tasmazia  and the Village of Lower Crackpot is only 20 minutes away. There is also a number of other nature reserves/national parks and gorgeous beaches and fishing within an easy drive.

I am currently working longer hours than I would prefer at present, so WWOOFers would need to be able to work on their own for a lot of the time.  Arrival day would need to be a Saturday so I have ample time to get you started and you have plenty of time to understand what needs to be done.

You would be better off if you had your own vehicle as the closest public transport is in Devonport. This will free you up for sightseeing etc during your time off.

If you need to be picked up from Devonport do not finalise travel plans until I confirm whether or not I can pick you up at on that day.

Also, please be aware that we are 20 minutes from town, so there’s no popping out on a whim.

    Organic/Biological methods we use

I spray the peach trees with a copper based spray annually (in late winter) for curly leaf. That’s it. No other sprays are used-not even herbal. My year round population of fairy wrens and seasonal bird visitors are my pest management system.

We do have to net the apples and cherries as we don’t produce enough for us and the birds and possums just yet.

    Special Conditions

This is a non-smoking property. If you wish to smoke you will need to walk the 50m to the front gate to do so.

We are meat eaters. We use wheat/spelt, but can cater for gluten free.
