Full Property Description
This is a 3 acre farmlet, on a large creek, where 5 alpacas and 3 sheep roam free range. There’s orchards of fruit trees both introduced and indigenous, vegetable gardens, bee hives, a worm farm, an agroforestry plot for future timber, and lots of indigenous planting. The house uses solar energy and tank water. The house-share is comfortable (own room, comfy bed., big bath) with modern conveniences (aircon, appliances, internet). There’s a range of tasks from weeding/garden bed development/ ride on mowing/ watering, to compost making and tree pruning, tree cutting, to construction of berry supports, fruit protection, and/or digging irrigation lines. The beach is 10 mins away by car and there’s a pottery, wineries, and the quirky Kongwak market nearby. The property has wombats, possums, abundant bird life, and an open lovely vista.
Organic/Biological methods we use
The property is largely run on permaculture principles, with cycles of waste (animal manure and fleece, grass, plant materials, food) being used to create nutrients and good soils. The farmlet represents a mix of functions (animal husbandry, fruits and edible plants, bees, worms, mushroom growing) all inter-related. Simple methods such as solarisation, companion planting, weed matting, animal feeding and mulching are used. A bio-filter project for the creek is under consideration.
It’s probably easier with a car because the beach and the closest public transport (that takes people to Melbourne (2 hr trip) is 10 mins away by car or taxi. However, the host can assist with some transport. The bee hive may concern someone with a bee allergy. Indoor dogs (friendly) can be visiting the property at times.
