City/Town: Innes Park
Farming Methods: Permaculture
Accommodation Type: In Our Home
The original Iluka Gardens of 35 years ago has downsized from 6ha to 1ha. Now surrounded by suburbia, it's still only 5mins walk to the Pacific ocean and fringing coral reef. There's a local bakery 5mins walk away and 5min bus ride to a local supermarket. Bundaberg and Bargara each within 15km. Our name has changed to Kalina Creek Home Stay to recognise the local intermittent creek on our northern boundary. The climate here is mild year round, with occasional hot humid summer days of 35C and rare cold winter nights of 5C. Within a Permaculture framework, our trend is toward native (unless otherwise useful) plants and recycled materials. We're doing a lot of environmental regeneration, soil conservation and structural refurbishment, while planning for native bees, vermiculture and poultry. Gardening includes planting, weeding, pruning and harvesting vegetable produce for home consumption and potential community exchange.

Bundagen is a rural community of 120 adults plus children, situated on the coast 30km south of Coffs Harbour, close to the mouth of the Bellinger River. Main interests are permaculture and alternative building. Many members are happy to take WWOOFers for short stays each. No cats or dogs, mainly vegetarians, some Hosts eat meat/fish. OUR COMMUNITY Bundagen is an intentional community established in August 1981 with three guiding principles:
  • social harmony;
  • environmental responsibility;
  • and economic independence.
We are a rural land sharing co-operative and wildlife sanctuary. We see our community as having essentially a caretaker role for this piece of coastal land and aim to create only low impact development. Regeneration of native vegetation in environmentally fragile areas is a focus, as is an emphasis on organic gardening. THE LAND Bundagen Co-operative owns and manages a total of 313 hectares of private property on the mid-north coast of NSW, just south of Coffs Harbour. Bongil Bongil National Park forms all our boundaries including a headland and ocean beach. Bundagaree Creek runs through part of the land and we have two freshwater lakes. A percentage of our land has high environmental value, approx 50% of which is protected and managed under a formal Conservation Agreement. Our land sits within the Gumbaynggirr nation.
