The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains – Growing Food, Art and Community

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Mountains, The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains is a philanthropic and community-driven venture transforming an ordinary urban block into a living classroom, showcasing dense food production in an urban setting whilst building Community through workshops and performances.

At its heart lies The Pond Performance Area — a natural gathering place surrounded by edible gardens; soon to host singers, actors, musicians, storytellers, poets, DJs and stand-up comics. Here, creativity and sustainability intertwine, nurturing both the land and the spirit. A place to connect with the earth, feel nurtured and nourished. A place to take a breath and be still.

A true labour of love, The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains is the result of five years of volunteer input, much of it from international travellers who have shared their time, skills and enthusiasm through exchange networks such as WWOOF and Workaway.

The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains will be featured in the upcoming Blue Mountains Edible Garden Trail on 25–26 October 2025, a community not-for-profit event with proceeds from ticket sales supporting participating school and community gardens. Tickets https://www.ediblegardentrail.com/

Amanda invites you to become involved and be a part of this evolving community space.

Amanda Argent is the co-coordinator of Permaculture Blue Mountains, a vibrant community that meets monthly with guest speakers to share learning and inspiration.

For two years, Amanda played a pivotal role in revitalising the Hawkesbury EarthCare Centre, which delivered 21 workshops, wrote successful grants, managed marketing and publicity and organised working bees that helped transform the site into a thriving community space.

She is also the Permablitz Coordinator for Permaculture Sydney West, helping to bring people together to design and build productive gardens.

Amanda’s focus has now returned to developing The Urban Farmer Blue Mountains,  an evolving community hub where food, art and education grow side by side. Amanda is soon to launch “Kids on the Street”. A programme designed to give local children hands-on experience with permaculture and food growing. Already, three neighbouring children have joined in the fun, getting their hands in the soil – not on a console, bringing joy, learning and a sense of shared purpose to the garden.

As a Volunteer Host, Amanda has reaped the rewards of these cultural exchanges and noticed that sometimes some volunteers have been sent to lighten her heart and remind her of the importance of remaining playful.

This is the place to go if you want to see a working permaculture farm in an urban setting. Amanda does it right, was a great host and made me feel welcome and appreciated during my time in Springwood. Good luck in your future endeavours, Amanda!

Our stay at Amanda’s lovely property was exciting and challenging. It was our first WWOOF experience and Amanda made it easy for us to stick with it. Her vision to transform her garden into a communal space is inspiring and needs a lot of work. So we had the opportunity to do a variety of tasks. We did weeding, gardening in general, digging holes, jackhammering, cared for the adorable quails and chickens and more. We learned about permaculture and met many people of the community. If you are willing to work hard and learn something you are totally right here! Thanks Amanda for the wonderful time, Sophia and Benji
