Deborah Woodburn
I own 25 acres of steep, rocky land in W Tree in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Over almost 35 years I have built (with considerable help) a lovely passive solar mudbrick house, planted crazy numbers of trees, gardened and raised my wonderful son. In many ways, I have worked towards a dream from my early 20’s to build a country life. My place is lovely. The vast expanse of bushland that surrounds it is beyond spectacular.

As age and a dodgy back now limits my ability to do the physical work needed here, I am increasingly inclined to welcome wwoofers who are younger and fitter than me. I happily repay them with good food and a homely environment and an introduction to both W Tree and my greater area. Having grown up in Wulgulmerang (30ks up the road) I know thw area and it’s inhabitants well.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

I was a host for several years and enjoyed many interactions with inspiring young budget travellers and their help here. During a busy period of house building and paid work I stopped.

Now that I am older I need the assistance of younger people more, and I very much enjoy learning about they’re life experiences and back stories. I grew up in a very isolated area with English post WW2 immigrant parents who welcomed all sorts of guests into our (very humble) home, and I continue to enjoy the interactions wwoofers bring me.

Organic/Biological methods we use

My 25 acre’s only supports 2 old, large, spoilt cows. I have, forever, breed calves to eat, butchered on my property by mobile butcher’s. (To me, a humane approach). I have now retired these girls and they keep the grass eaten and reduce my grassfire risk.

So outside of my house area I use some chemicals to control weeds like blackberry and thistle that I gave up trying to dig out 30 years ago.

In my productive vegetable garden I constantly add sheep manure from a friends farm, mulch, compostable stuff from the kitchen and purchased mushroom compost.

I save lots of seed, start most of my vegetables from seed and work my daily menus around what is in season.

I also try to preserve any excess.
