Monga Springs Farm is a 22 acre grazing property which is being converted to biodynamics and developed using permaculture design principles. The project is in the early stages. I have a small newly established veggie patch and a small flock of dorper sheep, 2 beautiful miniature galloway cows.
Why I became a WWOOF Host
I became a WWOOFER host to share my vision, get inspired, share ideas, get help with the work, meet fellow travellers on the path and create community. It is in the early stages. I have only been here for one year and the property is a blank canvas in some respects, In addition to organic principles I plan to use biodynamic principles and implement my permaculture training ( Crystal Waters, Maleny, Permaculture Design Course 2024) to design a sustainable, productive, low input farm. I have a lot of book and course learning but am a recent tree changer from the city so I am very keen to share with and learn from who ever visits this special place. My work has been as a film maker and documentary and television editor and I still work remotely from the property. So I am not a full time farmer yet. I love cooking and sourcing organic whole foods from the local providers and markets. Music and art are also passions of mine and artists are welcome to come and WWOOF a bit and also make art.
Organic/Biological methods we use
The farm is at the very beginning of conversion to biodynamics organics. I have done a Permaculture Design Course and am about to embark on Biodynamic training. The first projects are soil sampling, mapping and weed removal – mainly tussocks. Digging out tussocks for an hour I reckon should count as 2 hours ! There is a small heritage orchard that needs pruning. Cows that need grooming and company – yes they are herd animals and love company. Small dams and ponds where revegetation and transplanting native reeds and grasses to other areas will help speed up the rehabilitation of farm dams. A small vegie patch is thriving at the moment and it is growing little by little as I learn the ins and outs of cool temperature frosty climate. We will be applying Biodynamic sprays by back pack containers and hand pumps and collecting cow pats to make it ourselves.
