We live on a 67 acre farm in the southern Strzelecki Ranges, where we grow Fresian/mixed breed steers and revegetate areas to improve soil, water retention, biodiversity and shelter. In our house area we have alpacas, vegetable and habitat gardens.
We have known about WWOOFing for decades and previously hosted travellers when we lived in a rural area of the Northern Territory. Now we are retired and have a large house with 2 spare bedrooms we would like to meet new people and share ideas, especially about living sustainably. We are in our 70s and attempt to do most of the work on our property. We are active Landcare members and have good knowledge of revegetation with indigenous species in our area.
Organic/Biological methods we use
Our land had been conventionally farmed, ie. fertilisers, pesticides, set stocking and regular cutting for hay. We bought this property 6 years ago and are still establishing smaller grazing areas and experimenting with different regimes. We have used organic fertilisers in a limited way, and rely on regular stock rotation to maintain as close to 100% grass cover 100% of the time. Our stocking rate is low. In the vegetable garden we use compost and companion planting. We are learning how to cope with reduced rainfall since 2023.
