Darryl S.
We’re a small family living on a 3-acre homestead property on the rural NW coast of Tasmania. We produce a portion of our own food throughout the year from our orchard, berry patch, hothouse, vegetable garden and chickens. Our property can offer a good general exposure to a wide variety of regenerative, sustainable and resilient practices. We welcome short and long stays.

Why I became a WWOOF Host

We believe that resilience, self-reliance and knowledge of the natural world are key individual skills in the 21st Century. We’re keen to meet others who share our interests and learn from one another.

Organic/Biological methods we use

We work with principles of regenerative agriculture. Our garden is all organic, through a combination of composing, natural animal browsing and vermiculture. This system has allowed us to effectively reach zero food waste: all food bought or grown is either consumed or re-enters the nutrient cycle on the property itself. We take advantage of Tasmania’s climate to produce food year ’round. Our chickens are free-ranging and help in the garden when needed. We have 3 small perennial pastures for rotational grazing of sheep and other small ruminants.
We use pickling, canning and other preservation techniques to keep as much garden produce as possible for eating throughout the year.
By heating with deadwood harvested from the property our woodstove is effectively carbon neutral: the living trees sequestering the carbon we release burning their deadwood.
