Casauria
Casauria is a 9 hectare property which I am rehabilitating for wildlife, primarily birds and especially honey eaters. I have had some support from the federal government Bush for Birds programme and continue work for weed control, ecological thinning and also planting trees and shrubs to attract endangered honey eaters, including the regent honey eater and the swift parrot. I am also establishing a 140 tree olive grove and a 400m2 vegetable garden, utilising hugelkultures . Work would involve creating the vegetable garden and developing waterways and ponds using permaculture principles..

Why I became a WWOOF Host
I have a long history of hosting international guests during our 32 years living in Castlemaine and being active with the Castlemaine State Festival. I have also hosted exchange students whilst my own children were at school. I am keen to share my skills in gardening, landscaping and mechanics.
Organic/Biological methods we use
Primarily a permaculture approach to the whole property. Utilising as much as I can without accessing new resources wherever possible. I have a focus on improving the soil according to the planned function and creating habitat regardless of how messy it looks to the human eye (of some). Retaining water on the property and creating more sustainable micro climates where sheep once ran, is my attempt to contribute to the landscape in a positive way. Growing abundant vegetables for personal and family use is also a focus.

Courses & Events
Whilst I don’t hold any courses on a regular basis, previous Wwoofers have helped organise and run a Landcare field day on the property. Several have attended Landcare and climate resilience events as my guest. With a number of active environmental groups in the area, there is often something going on that is worth attending. My August guest has also attended a winery day to “Explore Shiraz” at my neighbours winery!
