Cann River Farm
Right on the pristine Cann River, we are creating a beautiful space, creating a wetland sanctuary with a perennial food forest, nursery and private, secluded campgrounds. We grow berries, apples, citrus, fresh flowers and vegetables, eggs.
Why I became a WWOOF Host
We are pretty isolated here and its hard to find workers, and we love to meet new people and work together. Connecting with others, especially around organic farming is fun and synergistic. Passing on any skills I have to the next generation is an honour.
Organic/Biological methods we use
I’ve been an organic gardener growing mainly food crops for over 30years and have a no dig, feed the worms philosophy. I like to think of myself as a worm farmer. I use waste materials, mulched up organic matter and living mulches to feed and protect the soil. I allow the chickens to roam, weeding and fertilising for me. I am planting wind breaks to create favourable microclimates for avocado and apples. Mostly I think gardens should be beautiful as well as functional, so there are no monocultures but I am building an ecosystem of abundant life by observing natures needs and interactions. I use fine netting to keep insects away from vulnerable crops such as brassicas and grow lots of flowering plants to attract beneficial insects.
