I currently work at a utilities company and it's helped me to learn that I love working outside in the fresh air and getting exercise as I work. I want to spend more time with plants and animals and learn more about how to look after them, specifically ducks and goats if possible -- I'd be interested in owning both someday, but want some hands-on experience with them first. I grew up with chickens and a horse. My parents used to make their own grape juices, applesauce, fruit preserves, bread, ketchup, and even a syrup made with bark from a hickory tree! I'm interested in doing more sustainable cooking, eating, and preserving, and working with ingredients from the soil to the table. When I was in Singapore a few months ago I visited a bar that uses as many local ingredients as possible to design cocktails native to the area, such as jackfruit or hibiscus flavoured drinks. They also used locally-sourced products to make their coasters, cups, and most other things in the bar! I really admire that philosophy.

I'm travelling with WWOOF in order to learn about sustainable and organic farming in different parts of the world, travel, and learn about places by actually living there. My work at school got me interested in both the actual work of and the politics/economics of farming and how people actually live on farms, and I knew the best way to learn was to experience the lifestyle for myself. Also, I've always been a terrible tourist and preferred meeting people and working somewhere rather than just go from museum to museum.

I did a WWOOF project in the UK and it was great fun! I learnt a lot about woodland management and sustainable living from the experience. So, now I\'m in Australia for the year, I thought it would be just as fun and interesting an experience to learn about organic farming here.

One of the most valuable things when you’re traveling is local knowledge. I joined WWOOF as a way to find my way into local communities throughout my travels, as well as gain new skills and understanding on sustainability, and where food comes from. I am excited to learn the ways of sustainable farming and homesteading, all while making valuable  connections along the way.

I will be in Melbourne for an international swim meet with my US teammates from 2/22 to 2/25. I will arrive in Melbourne from the US on 2/19 and was hoping to find a place to wwoof from 2/19 am to 2/21 pm (and possibly 2/23 to 2/24) while there. Staying and working on a farm interests me more than spending time in a city and I am interested to learn how other farms are managed. It is unfortunate the stays will be short, but I am happy to work full days while wwoofing to make the stay worth your while.
