City/Town: Yapeen
Farming Methods: Organic
Accommodation Type: Separate Building, Caravan
We live on a 5 acre rural block in Yapeen, Central Victoria. Yapeen is a great mix of quiet countryside within easy access to the historic goldfields and artistic hub of Castlemaine. We are owner builders and in the process of finishing a unique, off grid house. Our block has a diversity of native grasses, some large remnant trees, an abundance of reptiles and birds, resident frogs and visiting kangaroos. We have lots of plans and are in need of extra hands to get things done, but also keen for good company and to learn from and teach others. We need help with maintaining and improving the biodiversity on the block (weeding, native plant propagation, planting and watering revegetation patches and making wildlife habitat such as nesting boxes), house/shed building, animal fencing and gardening - we have an orchard and a large vegetable garden. We use organic methods only and implement permaculture concepts whenever possible. Activities you can do in your time off include bush walks, bird watching, visiting waterholes - we are close proximity to a natural swimming hole at Vaughan Springs. We have a spa/plunge pool available in the summer and a pleasant outside area for relaxing. WWOOFers will stay in a caravan or cabin with the use of our house for meals and bathroom facilities. We prefer to cook and eat together and are keen to experience cuisine from other cultures. We have a 6 month old baby and an enthusiastic 4 year old and would welcome others with small children.

The property is situated in Launching Place in the Yarra Valley, Victoria. I have 42 acres and am setting up an alternate livestyle where we are looking to be more self sufficient. I started doing a horticulture course online a few years back and just didn't commit to it. I thought maybe it wasn't the course for me but it turns out it's just not my style of learning. I don't enjoy sitting and staring at screens. That's a big part of wanting to be outside in the elements. So now I'm doing a permaculture course at Crystal Waters on the Sunny Coast next month (AUG 2021). I hope that will get me started along this journey as I have very limited knowledge on the whole thing as yet. When telling a friend about the course they mentioned WWOOFing and I figured that this would be a fantastic way to exchange my labour for education.

Accommodation Type: Separate Building
25 acres in the foothills of Mt. Roland near Sheffield on the way to Cradle Mt. The farm is run on the Permaculture principles, with a small herd of cattle, some poultry, orchard with mixed fruit, walnut & hazelnut trees, vegetable garden and a black-wood timber plantation. Gilles of French origin, is a carpenter, cabinet maker by trade & often involved in construction projects & prefers to use natural materials such as mud brick, cob or pressed earth bricks. Accommodation is a comfortable self-contained cottage with its own kitchen, bathroom & toilets, solar hot water and wood stove. It seems like a better way of working while travelling than the standard way of finding work, having that monetary relationship, worrying about where to live, trying to negotiate wages and all the other humdrum stuff. It sounds like the hosts are willing to share their knowledge, know how and experiences and be friendly at the same time. A very welcome change.

Skills I Want to Learn:
I really stumbled across WWOOF on my own as I was looking for volunteer/short term working experiences on farms across Australia. My brother and a few close friends are currently road tripping around Australia and I heard they were picking up work and cool experiences as they went. Naturally I went googling as that sounded so great and I was tied to Brisbane for the short term. I checked with a friend who had heard good things so decided I should sign up! I plan to spend 1-2 months (around December, January and February) similarly travelling and as mentioned above, trying out the farming lifestyle.
