City/Town: W Tree
Farming Methods: Organic
Accommodation Type: Separate Building
I own 25 acres of steep, rocky land in W Tree in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Over almost 35 years I have built (with considerable help) a lovely passive solar mudbrick house, planted crazy numbers of trees, gardened and raised my wonderful son. In many ways I have worked towards a dream from my early 20's to build a country life. My place is lovely. The vast expanse of bushland that surrounds it is beyond spectacular.

We live on a 2 hectare property with the young Angus river running through. We live 45min by car from Adelaide, 45min from safe swimming beaches & 45min from the surf, so we are pretty central. Accommodation  for 2 in separate stone cottage & own room in the main building. Just off the escarpment we have a beautiful farm with views towards the nearby hills and farms. We have some animals, cattle, goats and chickens as well as a variety of fruit trees. When blessed with rain we also have some beautiful fresh vegetables. We are unfortunately in drought which has made things very difficult as water is in short supply.

My husband and I own our property and run a center for rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife. Animals in care vary daily, we care for a variety of animals including, joeys, kangaroos, wallabies, birds, possums, flying foxes, and the occasional crocodile. There is always something to do here. We are a nonprofit organization and require a couple or a group of two to help on our bush block. We are 20km from town and a short quad bike ride to the marsh or to some local fishing spots. It gets quite hot out here during the wet season but we work around the weather. Early starts are required most mornings to help feed animals. Jobs here will include, feeding animals, cleaning animal areas, washing, animal food preparation, maintaining fences, pens, gardening, household tasks, machinery maintenance and general odd jobs some of which require heavy lifting. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the pool and explore our unique sites of the West Kimberley We can provide an evening meal if required and we have a food prep area with microwave, fridge and camp stoves, an outside BBQ is available too. Accommodation is basic Donga style with a wardrobe, air conditioning, tv and a queen size bed. All linen and towels are provided. The Donga has a bathroom/toilet/laundry at one end and a food prep area at the other. We run entirely from Solar power so we are mindful of power usage and our internet is via a satellite. Mobile phone coverage is available however in this part of the country it can only be accessed using a Telstra SIM card. Ray and I are easy to get on with but we require the help of people who enjoy the peace and quiet of a natural isolated bush block that are reliable, hard working, compassionate and can work unsupervised. People that are able to be here for a longer stay will get preference over a short stay as it takes time to learn how to manage the animals and the animals build a special trust with their carer. We can ensure a very unique and memorable stay. Please check out our Facebook page Derby Native Wildlife and message us if you are interested. I am more than happy to send you some photos and info.

Our farm is a mixed cropping, and grazing property set in a stunning valley in the foothills of the Richmond ranges National Park. We also have five heritage breeding sows and two boars, and a few boys and girls destined for pork eventually and currently we have 14 piglets of various ages. In addition we have poultry, Pekin ducks for eggs and meat, a mixed flock of about 30 chickens that produce gorgeous eggs daily. Finally, we have 19 guinea fowl, noisy, messy and often down-right annoying, but they eat ticks and keep snakes away. Other animals, we have two beautiful ginger cats for vermin control, mainly in the sheds, and a beautiful, loveable and majestic livestock guardian dog, a two- year-old Maremma, called Baci and an adorable Dixie puppy, called Dennis.

Virtue Farm is a 33 acre property overlooking Fraser Island, and includes 27 acres of remnant forest which will never be developed. The forest is an oasis for bird life and other animals and is great for walking.  We are 10 minutes from Hervey Bay and 10 minutes from the Fraser Island Barge that leaves from River Heads.  We have an existing permaculture garden and are upscaling to small farm size. Our house block is 1.5 acres and backs on to the farm land.  We are in the beginning stages of becoming a commercially viable farm, so you will be helping to establish our property. We ask for five hours of work per day per person, depending upon the type of work and we can be very flexible in this regard. This could include farm work, vegetable patch work, caring for the chooks, moving small saplings, rock picking, planting, mulching, weeding, harvesting, fencing, land clearing and chopping wood  and general home maintenance. If you have any specific skill base or interest we are open to negotiation. In return, we will supply an evening meal shared with us and you can prepare your own breakfasts and lunch from what we supply. Accommodation  for 4 in a granny flat downstairs, we have 1 room with two king single beds - can be joined to make a king, 1 room with a queen size bed. We can accommodate singles and couples. Mixed diet and a mix of vegetarian and meat based meals.  Whilst we have some capacity to cater for vegans, we will have to learn from you to assist us to cater for your needs and are willing to do so within limits. Internet access is available close to the house. Virtue Farm acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land, the Butchulla people, where we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. While you are here, you should make time to go to Fraser Island. We are very flexible and happy to work around dates that you can access which are cheaper for you. Many of our volunteers have found great deals on the “Book Me” website. You would be welcome to leave your property here where it would be safe if you do choose to visit. Additionally, we strongly suggest that you plan for at least a one night overnight stay on Fraser Island; many of our volunteers have done the day tour and loved it, but all say they wished they’d stayed for longer as they felt like they only had a glimpse and not enough time to experience all it has to offer. Those people who stayed for two or three nights seem to have had the best experiences. We have some back packs and camping gear for volunteers to use (for a small fee to cover wear and tear) if they want to do the longer treks and hikes on Fraser Island. We are also aware that some companies do dual booking between the Whit Sundays and Fraser Island and they have been both popular and economical. As long as you book your trip to Fraser Island from Hervey Bay we are happy to drive you to where you need to be. If you book from Rainbow Beach, then you will have to arrange your own transport as it is about an hour and a half away. We have two bicycles and helmets which we are happy to share so you can spend a day or afternoon in Hervey Bay exploring and experiencing all that our fabulous community has to offer. There is no public transport to our home, but we are happy to drive into Hervey Bay so you can see our beautiful beaches, piers, parks and lifestyle. There are some lovely walks in the remnant forest on our block and it is always lovely to watch the kangaroos that visit daily. The volunteers that we have had so far have enjoyed their time with us and have been happy to join in with our family and extended family. You will stay in the two bedroom flat downstairs, with its own bathroom, kitchenette with microwave, fridge, toaster and kettle , dining area and lounge room. We have one room with a queen sized bed and one with two king singles. There is a TV, DVD player and some board games, card, paints and mindful colouring books. We also have heaps of Earth Garden magazines and similar to browse.

We are a property 80km from Townsville. We practice regenerative farming with our cattle and goats. This means moving the livestock across the landscape in such a way it increases the health and biodiversity of the country, it is not only sustainable but regenerative. We try to grow as much of our own food as we can in our permaculture style garden. We believe the health and well being of our animals and the environment are the top priority.
