A lot of other companies offer really cheap deals but have no reception outside major cities.

Really it depends where you are.
If i were to travel I would have a ph that is not locked to a network and use Telstra and vodafone sims as needed.
At our place vodafone is better than next G even. Prob best to check network maps of the area you wish to travel and have cards to suit Qt121
