WORKING in EXCHANGE for YOUR KEEP is the BASIS of ALL WWOOFing.
We suggest that 3 to 6 hours a day is fair exchange for a day's full board and lodging. It can vary according to the standards of the country you are in, the degree of self-sufficiency expected in your living arrangements, how busy the host is at the time of your visit - and lots of other factors. In poorer countries you may be asked to make a small donation towards the cost of your food, or be required to work the same hours as your host, especially if you are unable to make a contribution for food.
WWOOF AUSTRALIA's List of Independent Hosts aims to cover all those countries that DO NOT have a national WWOOF organization.
To help you see which those are, see the WWOOFing Around The World list above. The book costs AUD$27 within Australia (includes GST) and AUD$32 if it is sent to an overseas address. Buying this book makes you a member of WWOOF Australia for 12 months and entitles you to use this network of hosts.
Insurance is not available through us, but we suggest that you talk to your travel agent and try to arrange 24 hour a day coverage against accident or illness that would be effective wherever you are staying.
THE ENTRIES
In most parts of the world, our farm hosts are mainly pursuing a simple, sustainable, lifestyle. Some are Permaculture enthusiasts, and about 15% use Biodynamic growing methods. Some of our hosts are parts of alternative, co-operative, communities, and a few are communal living groups.
The list includes some other forms of voluntary work situations as well as organic farms. Ranging from Community work opportunities in (usually) poorer countries, through helping poorer groups or handicapped people, to working with National Trusts, Conservation Groups and even Scenic Railways & Archaeological sites. The selection of these entries is based on cost, and interest.
THE WORK
The work you will do for these hosts will be wide and variable, and will include anything the host needs doing and you are capable of! Since you work as family there are no set hours, but an average of 3 to 6 hours daily would be a fair exchange, perhaps longer in poorer countries where peasant farmers regularly work very long hours.
The minimum stay on a WWOOF farm is 2 nights, the maximum stay is by mutual agreement between you and your host. Most stays are for a few days only, but see the list for hosts who encourage longer term stays up to as long as 6 months
The List of Independent Hosts is your membership booklet and detailed host guide and should not to be given to anyone else. From it you simply select the host you wish to visit, make contact and arrange a mutually convenient time and period. Bookings can be made by phone, or by letter, direct to the farm you choose. We give phone numbers where these are known to us, but check local phone books for others. You may wish to book your first farm by mail, enclosing an International Reply Coupon to ensure an airmail reply. Where phones are uncommon, try to arrive about midday so you have time to move on if staying there is not convenient.
